I caught the Hosty Duo at the 319 the other night. They come to Stillwater once a month and put on a great show.
Mike Hosty plays a guitar (a Stratocaster that sounds like a Telecaster), he plays bass on pedals with his feet, and he has a kazoo taped to the side of his mic. Tic Tac plays the drums. The music is red dirt country bluesy bluegrass rockabilly "hic-hop" with great lyrics and fantastic fingerpicking. The crowd really gets into it, that's part of what makes it such a good show. Everyone knows his songs and sings & dances along like dead heads. My friends had a table right next to the stage, but after the first set so many people were crammed in front of me it didn't matter.
For the record if you've only heard Stoney LaRue sing it, "Oklahoma Breakdown" is a Hosty song. (Hosty has credit in the Stoney Larue album notes.)
I don't know the exact name of the 319. It's had a few names over the last several years - The College Bar, Mike's College Bar, Jammers College Bar. Following the pattern it should be the 319 College Bar, but I think it's just plain 319. It's on the strip next to the OSU campus at 319 S. Washington, the place with "319" in two-foot high characters on the awning. I guess the current owners don't want anyone to forget where it is.
