Gear Review: Ogio No Drag backpack
I have an Ogio No Drag backpack. It's a sport-oriented pack, specifically designed for motor sports but it works well for cycling. The name comes from the stiff round back, and what it might do for your aerodynamics while you're hanging onto handlebars. To keep it smooth the bag opens at the back panel. A double zipper around the outside lets the top three sides of the back panel open completely. This panel has a laptop slot for a 15.4" laptop, a divider for papers, and a couple of small pockets.
Inside the pack, on the outside wall (opposite the back panel) is a big pocket for a hydration bladder. It's bigger than the typical hydration pocket, I use it for other storage. It also has a couple of small side pockets at the bottom. It's not a big pack - it's pretty much full with a computer, my lunch, and a change of clothes.
Outside at the bottom is a pocket that holds a "helmet hood" that stretches out over the pack as a hammock for a helmet. It holds a bicycle helmet just fine, and I assume you could stretch it out to fit a full face helmet. It attaches with three swivel snaps at the top and sides, and two adjustable buckles at the bottom. (The buckles attach inside the storage pocket.)
It has two nicely padded shoulder straps with sealed zippers, and a waist strap (not a hip belt - it's for stabilizing the load, not carrying it) that I don't use. The pack stays in place on my back with just the shoulder straps. The waist strap is a little to long to allow the two adjustable buckles to snug it up completely, so it hangs loose off the bottom. It also has an "audio" pocket at the top - a small lined pocket with a headphone pass-through hole.
I carry my computer in it and I have no worries. I think it would protect it as well as could be expected in a crash, since it's right against my back. I've worn it up to 28mph "in the drops" on the dropped handlebars (so my back is close to flat) and I didn't feel any wind resistance at all. Without a pack the air will flow in my collar and along my back if I'm wearing a loose shirt, as a point of reference for my aerodynamics.
The good:
- Back panel zipper means the outside should be very water resistant
- Streamlined
- Load is secure
- Construction & materials are top notch
The bad:
- Half the pockets are open from the top, so that stuff is dumped out after a ride on a road bike.
- If the two "vents" on the back are functional that would degrade the water resistance a bit.
Summary: It's great, I love it.
